A change is coming to the permanent migration program in Australia
The move has the potential to bring an unusual mix between family reunion migrants and skilled workers as it tries to give a boost to the economy. A former Department of Prime Minister and Cabinet official, Martin Parkinson, is driving the Morrison government to “go for broke” on the skilled side of Australian immigration.
Alan Tudge, Acting Australian Immigration Minister, reported it is early to guess about the program’s future, but changes are definitely in order. He stated “Once you get into next year, we’ll have to reset what the permanent migration caps look like”.

Tudge said the cap for permanent migrants and the distribution had not been set yet. He is considering using the Global Talent Independent program, launched last year, which was developed to bring 5,000 of the world’s top talent to Australia every year using a fast-tracked permanent resident visa. Tudge believes Australia is more attractive than ever, due to how well the country faired through the COVID-19 pandemic.
